Technology Education - Electric Car project

Picture
The electric car project is great project for Technology or Engineering classes.   This webpage will take you through drawing the car using SketchUp a free CAD program from Trimble.  The students will draw the car with great accuracy by following multiple step by step videos. They will also use these videos to assemble the kit.  The kit is available at Kelvin product #841416.  This project would also be suitable for an after school club. If the students can draw and assemble the car in about 6 hours with little to no experience in either SketchUp or working in the shop.  Once completed the Activity book included with the kit can keep them busy for hours.

Drawing the frame

The Frame is one of the simplest part to draw. Simple make a box 6" by 1 1/2" (6,1 1/2). Then push pull it 1/4" (1/4) for the thickness

Drawing and Placing the eyehooks

There are a total of four eye hooks needed to build the car.  You will first draw one then make duplicates of it.  Then you will place them accurately into the frame

Drawing and Placing the Axles

You will need to draw two separate axles as they are slightly different from each other.  Once they are drawn you will need to accurately place them on to the car.
