NyS Technology Education Standard 5
Over the last few years most teachers across the country have been going through a bunch of changes in order to meet the new mandates. As technology teachers we are split into two groups, those who have regional testing and those who choose their own (local) assessment. From my understanding this decision is made by the superintendent of the school district. There are pros and cons of each but we won't get into that here. The purpose of this testing is to insure that the students are in fact learning in the classrooms. This is measured by comparing the post test score against the pre-test score for each student. The teacher is responsible for improvement between the two tests. Prior to the students taking the post exam the teacher meets with administration and sets up a target for his/her students called the Student Learning Objective or SLO. The SLO for each student can be set up in a variety of ways. Your administration will guide you on how you should set yours up. Typically you are looking for lower performing students to have a higher jump then a higher performing student. If you think about this it make sense because it is harder to show growth on students who performed well on their pre-test. So when determining your student's SLO take this into consideration.

As part of the APPR you may or may not have control over what you use for your local assessment. Some school districts assign results from other test that determines your local assessment. Other districts allow teachers to create their own approved assessments that are given at least three times a year.
Whether you use your own assessments or regional assessments you need to be meeting the NY State Technology Education Standards. If you're a veteran teacher you probably already know it is rather difficult to cover all these standards in one course especially if you only have them for half a year. Most likely you have even drifted away from those standards over time as there hasn't been any state exams since the early 2000's. For all you new teachers out there you will soon find out what I am talking about. With so much on the line (your job) it makes sense to do everything your can to show that your students and curriculum are in line with the technology standards, as well as the common core standards. Calculating your SLO (Student Learning Objective)
How to set up your classroom SLO
Step 1 Set up all your classes like shown in the chart above.
Step 2 Enter your Pre-Test or other data being used to determine their prior knowledge Columns D and E
Step 3 In the cell to the right of the first pre-test score (F5 for this spreadsheet) enter the following formula =.45*(100-E5). The E5 is the cell that contains the pretest score out of 100, your cell may be different. Basically this formula looks at the pretest grade and subtracts it from 100. This gives you the room for growth. It then takes 45% of the room for growth and places it in the box. You can easily adjust this to fit your needs by changing the .45 to other numbers.
Step 4 In the target box (G5) enter the following formula =E5+F5 again yours may be different depending on how you set up your spreadsheet. In a nut shell Target =Pretest + growth.
Step 5 Use the lower right hand corners of the formula boxes to drag, copy and paste the formulas down in one swift move.
Step 6 Get your administrators blessing.
Note: The target numbers may not look all that great but remember you need to have about 80% beat their target.
