Types of DOcuments

When dealing with documents there are a couple of categories that you should be aware of they are spreadsheets, Presentations, Computer Aided Drawings, and Word processing. Microsoft created Microsoft office back in 1990, it has dominated the work, and school environment ever since. Microsoft Word is the most commonly used word processing program in the world, Excel is a spreadsheet program that comes with the Microsoft office Suite. Excel is used in the business and engineering world on a daily basis  because of it's capability of computing mathematical formulas and generating graphs and charts. Power Point is another useful tool that comes with most Microsoft Office Suites.  Power Point is used to generate presentations that can be viewed on computer screens, projectors and even turned into videos for online viewing.  This program is popular in schools because it is so easy to use and Microsoft gives school massive discounts to use its software with the students.

Both Apple and Google have developed their own versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint but will probably never catch up to them in popularity.  However Google Drive is catching up because it offers it's programs for free. One thing that Microsoft didn't develop was a Computer Aided Drawing software program. Google Created SketchUp which is a free CAD program that was recently sold off to Trimble.  SketchUp became popular quickly because it is free and relatively easy to learn compared to other programs expensive and hard to use. AutoCad and Inventor are two popular CAD programs in the engineering world but some are being replaced by SketchUp as these businesses are trying to lower their overhead cost.

Choosing the appropriate software for the job at hand is an important skill to have. Use the learning game below to categorize the job to the correct software. Good Luck
